Schloss Wilhelmshöhe was under Landgrave Wilhelm IX. Built in 1786 in several stages. Previously, an Augustinian monastery and later a hunting lodge had already stood in the same place.
Especially the middle part of the castle was completely destroyed during World War II. Between 1968 and 1974, the building was rebuilt and redesigned for a museum use.
Today, the Schloss Wilhelmshöhe accommodates an antique collection, the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, the Graphische Sammlung and a library. In addition, the museum offers space for special exhibitions.
Castle rooms in the narrower sense can be visited in the Weißenstein wing.
