        A bridge over the Roer is mentioned at this location for the first time in 1348. There is no further information about this bridge. In 1653 there is said to have been a bridge made of Namur stone here.[1] In 1726, however, the city of Roermond had two brick kilns constructed for the construction of a stone bridge. In 1755, this bridge was inspected by the Maastricht city architect Tilman Keerens. It then turned out that the pavement above the second arch as one enters the city had subsided. In January 1764 the condition of the bridge was so bad that it was decided to completely rebuild it. The new bridge was built from Namur stone. The laying of the foundation stone took place on June 17, 1771. The first stone with the inscription "Neoconditus" (rebuilt) was, according to the Chronicle of Roermond, 11 by 11 inches and was placed in the middle of the last pillar on the other side.[2] Maria Theresia donated the bridge to the city. The new bridge is equipped with icebreakers and because there was still shipping in the Roer in 1771, the middle arches are higher than the outer ones.[1]

        The bridge was severely damaged during the Second World War. It was not until 1955 that it was repaired and the temporary Bailey bridge was cleared away.[3] Since the mid-20th century, every year on Shrove Tuesday, a life-size doll of the Greek god Bacchus has been thrown into the Rur from the Stone Bridge. This is called Bacchusdrieve in Limburg.
