The 31-hectare area was a large scour field made up of Elbe and harbor sediments that had been created in 1935. In the 1950s, a five-foot layer of harbor silt was applied. The area was then built on with the Bille settlement. But in the harbor silt there were large amounts of pollutants, as was discovered in 1989. Most of the houses had to be demolished and the floor had to be replaced at great expense. Today there is a golf course on the rehabilitated area, a few rows of houses remained.
A soil nature trail, which starts at the clubhouse of the golf course, provides information about this tiresome environmental issue. However, the six on different panels that are spread around the area are only small. More information is available here: hamburg.de/bodenlehrpfad-bille-siedlung
