                      The Harz – Braunschweiger Land – Ostfalen Geopark is a UNESCO Global Geopark in the three German states of Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia.
                      In an area of around 100 × 120 kilometers, the Harz - Braunschweiger Land - Ostfalen Geopark includes nature parks and other nature conservation areas that identify the Harz, the Braunschweiger Land and Ostfalen with Elm and Drömling as a destination area for nature-based tourism.
                      Within the Harz - Braunschweiger Land - Ostfalen Geopark there is a natural change from the Geste lowland of the Aller flatland to the richly structured Eastphalian hill country to the Harz low mountain range.

                        Geotopes are windows into the history of the earth. They are formations of nature that provide knowledge about the development of the earth and life.                         Where the Harz stands out from the Braunschweiger Land, a section of the Geopark is considered the “classic square mile of geology”. Rich in silver ores, because of the fertile soil and the availability of energy from wood or charcoal and hydropower, the area of the Geopark was a center of power for the Holy Roman Empire. The Imperial Palace of Goslar and other royal palaces, including Pöhlde, Tilleda and Werla, are a reminder of this. A millennium later, the region was a center of both plant breeding and industrialization. The Association of German Engineers was founded in Alexisbad in the Harz Mountains in 1856.

                        In addition to being an industrial and research location, the Geopark region is now one of the most important travel destinations in Germany. Nature parks in the Harz, the “Elm-Lappwald” nature park and the “Unteres Saaletal” nature park are extensive recreational landscapes. At 1,141 m above sea level, the Brocken is also the highest mountain in the geopark, the “Harz/Saxony-Anhalt” nature park and the national park. Young people from all over the world study in the Geopark at the universities and colleges in Braunschweig, Clausthal-Zellerfeld, Halberstadt, Nordhausen and Wernigerode.
