In the 17th century, a new building was built about 100 meters from the old castle, which was expanded with outbuildings around 1700. The new castle cannot be visited but can be seen from the street. Part of the ruins of the old castle can be seen especially in winter.

Millen Castle, known locally as Kasteel Millen, is located near the village of Nieuwstadt in the province of Limburg in the Netherlands.
The present remains of Millen Castle date from the 14th century. This castle was probably preceded by a wooden tower house surrounded by a palisade, which was destroyed around 1287. We know that in 1326 there was a castle on a moth in Millen.
Around 1365, Jan van Meurs, commissioned by Eduard, Duke of Gelre, began building the ruins that are preserved today. A ring wall was built around the oval plateau, which included two towers. A round keep with walls 2.6 meters thick next to the gate and a horseshoe-shaped tower with a well. The curtain wall had ramparts that stood on large arches. The inner courtyard probably ran to the middle, where a building might have stood.
In 1389 the castle was incorporated into the Brabant line of fortifications, which probably led to some modifications. The oldest, kidney-shaped outer bailey was probably built at this time, which had a gate tower, a drawbridge and a rampart on its north side. The outer bailey was connected to the main bailey by a wooden bridge.
Around 1450, a second, oval ring wall was built about 5 meters from the first. This circular wall with ramparts incorporated 7 square towers projecting outwards. The pointed-arch gate tower of the former second outer bailey probably dates from this time. This outer bailey was connected to the main bailey by a stone bridge.
In 1499 Millen Castle was annexed by the Duchy of Gulik and thus lost its military function. And although there were plans to demolish it in 1538, the castle was again strengthened in 1566. In 1650, however, the role of Millen Castle finally ended when Duke Wolfgang Wilhelm von Pfalz-Neuberg approved the demolition. However, he determined that the round keep and part of the wall with a gate remained as a remnant of a great past.
Today's outer bailey was built around 1700 using building material from the ruins. In 1803 the castle was publicly auctioned off by the French occupying forces, who had confiscated it. In 1816 Millen Castle became Dutch as a result of a border regulation, while the village of the same name remained German. The border is now only about 25 meters from the castle.
