Castle Ter Horst is located on the Veluwe, hidden between the trees. The castle was built in 1557. The castle was rebuilt around 1791, with the front becoming the back, and vice versa. From that moment on, the castle took on the current neoclassical appearance.

Wijnand Hackfort, mayor of Arnhem, had a castle built here in 1557. The neo-classical facade on the entrance side was installed at the end of the 18th century. Until that moment, that side of the castle was the back of the castle.

The Hackforts were not without means and married wealthy wives. Their lavish influence is reflected in the interior, for example in the carved wooden spiral staircase, the beautiful tile walls, the bells in the turret and many painted family portraits.

In one of the outbuildings is a secret chapel where Roman Catholics from the area could go to church in secret. The family grave of the Hackforts is in Loenen next to the Roman Catholic church St. Antonius Abt.

The Hackforts lived in the castle for seven generations and even after their departure, the castle has almost always been inhabited by the owners.
Huis Ter Horst Castle is a national monument.
