The church on Mariánské námestí is a kind of "jumper" for visitors to Trenčín Castle. It's about halfway to it, so it's a nice place to catch your breath while looking around the city. There are nice views of the opposite Piaristic Church, the Town Tower, or the pavilions of nearby buildings.

The Parish Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is among the most valuable and at the same time the oldest religious buildings in the city. Together with the carnery, the town rectory and the former armory, it was part of the town fortifications that protected the access road to the castle. They were creating a complex on Mariánské vršek, also known as Marienberg.

The church was built in 1324, probably on the foundations of an even older building from the middle of the 13th century. In 1364, the church received an exceptional and rare gift - a gilded Gothic monstrance donated by Emperor Charles IV. to King Ludovít the Great on the occasion of successful peace negotiations at Trenčín Castle.

The building had to face destructive flames several times. In 1528, during Katzianer's siege of the castle, the church was burned together with the nearby Karner St. Michael. Subsequently, the church was rebuilt in the middle of the 16th century by Italian builders in the Renaissance spirit. The richly decorated entrance portal and the pulpit also date from this period. Due to a fire in 1886, the parish church was rebuilt again at the beginning of the 20th century. It was modified to its present form, when the dome of the tower was added, the church got a new facade and colored glass windows.

In the vestibule of the church, there is a Gothic tombstone of pawnbroker Martin Zim from 1498 embedded in the wall. In the left side nave of the church is the funeral chapel of the Ilešházis from 1648, which was rebuilt and decorated by Ľudovít (Ludwig) Gode, a pupil of the Austrian sculptor Rafael Donner, at the suggestion of Jozef Ilešházi (author of the statue of St. Martin in St. Martin's Cathedral in Bratislava). Gode is the author of the Crucifixion sculptural group and the portrait epitaph plate of the donor Gašpar Ilešházi. From the old Gothic interior of the church, two fragmentarily preserved painted altar wings from around 1400 and a fragment of a small portable altar of the Virgin Mary from around 1420 have been preserved, which are in the National Gallery in Budapest. Their enlarged illustrations can be seen in the exposition of Karner St. Michael opposite the parish church.

Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary.
14th-century Gothic (around 1324), three-nave church. A covered wooden staircase from the 1500s leads to the church. It was remodeled in the Renaissance style in the 16th century. It is a popular farewell place for pilgrims on St. Mary's holidays.

The chapel on the left belongs to the Illésházy family, the chapel on the right is dedicated to Saint Imre. It was destroyed by fire several times. In 1790, three of its four bells melted. The entire church burned down in 1886, after which it was completely rebuilt between 1911 and 1912.
