Vlissingen has an interesting history, especially because of its strategic location at the mouth of the Western Scheldt. During the Second World War the city was the scene of heavy fighting, both in the city itself and on the Western Scheldt. The Landing Monument on the Commandoweg in Vlissingen commemorates the amphibious landing of British, Dutch and French commandos from No. 4 Commando on November 1, 1944. Next to the Landing Monument is the monument of the 52nd Lowland Division.
