The South Devon Railway is a seven-mile (1 km) stretch of heritage rail between Buckfastleigh and Totnes. Originally opened in 1872, this branch line transported mainly freight, such as coal and wood. It actually stretched to Ashburton, linking the stannary town to the mainline at Totnes, but the Buckfastleigh to Ashburton section was sacrificed when the A38 was widened.

Closing in the 60s to freight and passengers, the line was soon reopened again as a tourist attraction. Today, there’s a steam service that runs on the line and winds through exceptionally pretty surroundings, alongside the River Dart. If you happen to be in Buckfastleigh when there’s a steam train coming or going, it’s like stepping back in history. Even when there’s not a train in action, the station is still a lovely place to visit with its museum old fashioned look.
