The water could be temporarily stored and then run through the city to drain the city, to rinse it clean. If there was a risk of flooding, the sluice could be closed and the water was led via a connecting channel to the Grote Nete, which made an arc around the city. In addition to the function of water control, it also had a role in the defense of the city. The building on the lock was originally used to house the lock keeper. Older inhabitants of Lieren also nicknamed it the pest house. However, this name was not chosen entirely correctly, the actual plague house was located a little further along the Grote Nete.
