In summer the Westpark is often used for barbecues and extensive parties and is a meeting place for students, musicians and media people. It is located near the Kreuzviertel, the Unionviertel and the Althoff block and mainly attracts a young, alternative audience.

Dortmund's Westpark in the west of the city center is a centrally located park, which, despite its good connections, is very quiet and is used as a recreational and leisure area.

The history of Westpark began in 1810. At that time, the city leased an elongated rectangular site in front of the Westentor gate and directly adjacent to the old Dortmund court and execution site. This was where Dortmund's first cemetery outside the city walls, the Westentodtenhof, was to be built.

The burial ground, consecrated in 1811, was available for burials of all Christian denominations, which was still very unusual at the time. However, the cemetery was continuously used, and the number of burials grew with the city's population. As a result, the original cemetery grounds had to be expanded several times to meet demand.

By its 100th anniversary, the cemetery was already partially closed.

Nevertheless, it reached its capacity limit in the 1890s and was initially closed to row burials.

In 1911, on the 100th anniversary of the Westentotenhof, burials were only held in family plots. Many old graves had already disappeared. The cemetery gradually took on the character of a park.

The transformation of the cemetery into a park was not a straightforward process. At the end of the First World War, burials were again held here: a memorial cemetery for fallen soldiers of the First World War was established at a central location. The victims of the "Dortmund St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre" were also buried here. This gravesite still exists today.

Vegetables were grown in the park during the hardship following the Second World War.

Numerous bombs fell on the site during the Second World War. Vegetables were grown here in the years of hardship following the end of the war. It wasn't until the end of the 1940s that the park was restored.

It once again became a gathering place for both near and far neighbors. And the same problems developed here as elsewhere.

Vandalism destroyed many of the last gravestones, and littering ensued. Westpark even became a place of fear when the drug and prostitution scene took over.
