Niedersfeld is located where the Hillebach flows into the upper reaches of the Ruhr, immediately northwest of the small Hillestausee. The village, whose core lies at about 515 m above sea level, is the first town on the young Ruhr to be surrounded by a total of seven valleys. A section of the B 480 runs through it, and a section of the Rothaarsteig runs over the mountains east of Niedersfeld.

The highest mountain near Niedersfeld is the Langenberg, which is 843.2 m high and is also the highest mountain in North Rhine-Westphalia. It can be found not far to the northeast, on the border triangle of the municipal areas of Winterberg, Olsberg and Willingen.
