Barbican (also called Rondle) - barbican, the northernmost part of Krakow's urban fortifications. It is located in Planty, in front of Florian's Gate, on the southern side of ul. Basztowa.
It was built in 1498–1499 during the reign of King Jan Olbracht in fear of the Wallachian-Turkish invasion threatening Kraków after the defeat in Bukovina. The inspiration for this decision were two barbicans in Toruń (Starotoruński from 1429 and Chełmiński from 1449), whose defensive capabilities prompted the king to build "such a fortalice" in Kraków.
It is a section of a circle with an internal diameter of 24.40 m, and the thickness of the walls is over 3 m. It is a Gothic building with seven towers - round and hexagonal, arranged alternately with respect to each other. In the past, it was connected to the Florian Gate by a long neck and its main task was to defend it.
