The Sassenpoort probably dates from 1409 and can be regarded as the main remnant of the medieval wall of Zwolle. The high gate with a wide passage was an inner gate and connected to a roundel and an outer gate on the landward side.

History

The Hanseatic city of Zwolle was in the early 15th century in its heyday as a trading city. In 1407 Zwolle was admitted as a full member of the powerful city association of the North German Hanze. The large size of this city gate represented the wealth of Zwolle in that period.

In 1893 the municipality of Zwolle donated the Sassenpoort to the State of the Netherlands in order to house the state archive. The building has since lost its function. On January 15, 2016, the government sold the building to the National Monument Organization.
Characteristics
Between 1894 and 1897 the gate was restored and dormer windows and a neo-Gothic spire bell tower were installed. The 18th-century bell tower was demolished for this. Between the corner towers is a meze building. From holes in the floor of this extension, boiling pitch could be poured over any invading enemies.
