Dear visitor,

chapel was built in 1947, in memory of the victims of W.W. II; this place was the shelter where +/- 800 resistance fighters gathered from Bilzen - Genk - Kortessem.

The annual commemoration takes place, every year on the 2nd Sunday of September, and this in memory of those who gave their lives and fought for freedom and the fatherland.

Only a few days before the liberation, on 5 and 7 September 1944, Guillaume Engelen, Lambert Meesters and Louis Noben were shot by the Germans.

They were on their way to - or stayed in the resistance shelter here in Hoelbeek. Below you can see some photos of the funeral of these 3 resistance fighters.

The marble columns next to the chapel bear the names of all resistance fighters who gave their lives for the fatherland.

While a sigh of relief, after 4 long and anxious years of war, our hearts expanded - now that our liberation, from the enemy's oppressive hand, dawned on the morning horizon... the sacrifice of life was still requested of three of our brothers.
Thus they departed from life, leaving not only to the young men but also to the whole people the memory of their death, as an example of virtue and courage.
