Castle Ampfurth and telegraph station no. 16

The castle complex is a unique sight in the Bodetal. The castle Ampfurth is built in the style of the Renaissance.
The castle was first mentioned in the middle of the 12th century. The Rundburg passed into the possession of the archbishops of Magdeburg in 1257. From 1381 the lords of the Asseburg took over the administration of the plant. In 1483 it passes into their possession. The castle church still houses the graves of the family today. In the period from 1608 to 1615 the castle Ampfurth was built in place of the castle, which was one of the most beautiful Renaissance castles in northern Germany. After the owner had to sell the property because of high debts in 1712, the castle was already in 1715 to King Frederick William I on.

The octagonal staircase tower of the castle, which still dominates the townscape, served from 1833 to 1853 as the 16th telegraph station of the Royal Prussian-optical telegraph line, which ran from Berlin to Koblenz. The individual stations of the Ampfurth telegraph station were housed in an observatory, two castles, three churches and 56 functional buildings. The transmission of the signals was opto-mechanical. The construction of the line of the Ampfurth telegraph station began in the summer of 1832. However, the last section went out of service 20 years later.
In 1997, Schloss Ampfurth became the property of the von Wahnschaffe family and has been privately owned to date.
