Parts of the Roman villa have already been excavated, others still appear to be buried underground. The illustrations are very beautiful. There is also a rest area.

This is a nice place. We were able to sit comfortably at a table, unpack our food and have a picnic.

The conspicuous hills in the Binger Forest, district of Sulg, were first described in 1771 as Alt Closter Fundament. However, the excavations of 1779 uncovered the remains of a medium-sized Roman farm. These individual farmsteads, known as villa rustica, were distributed in large numbers in what was then an open settlement landscape. Villages were rare. 70 percent of the Roman population lived on such farms.

The Villa Rustica Binger Wald was built around 150 AD and inhabited until around 420 AD. The 3.5 hectare walled homestead was set amidst his farmland. The main building of the owner family and more than ten outbuildings such as stables, workshops and accommodation for the working families and day laborers were located within the courtyard wall.

The main income was earned through the diverse use of forests, field and fruit cultivation and animal husbandry. Together with the older neighboring villas such as in Weiler and Waldalgesheim, the Villa Rustica Binger Wald supplied the stationed military and the provincial population. Its location on a Roman side street of the Mainz-Trier trunk road (Ausoniusstrasse) may have offered an extra income for using the property as a statio.

Very nicely worked up complex of a Roman villa rustica.
Research is still going on here.
Nevertheless, a large part is already open to the public and hikers with information.
I find it remarkable that a story is made for children here: What did Roman children play with? Children of our time not only find answers to these questions, but can also try out Roman children's and board games directly.

About 2,000 years ago, the Binger Forest was part of the Roman province of Upper Germania. At that time there was a Roman estate here. The remains of the main building were excavated between 1999 and 2003. The ten outbuildings are rubble hills in the forest. The Villa Rustica Binger Wald was around 150nCh. built and up to about 420nCh. inhabited. The skin livelihood was generated through the diverse use of forests, field and fruit growing and livestock farming.

A trip into the past is super exciting for me. The forest there is beautiful and has a large number of well-known hiking trails through it. The adventure path is highly recommended for children.

There was once a Roman villa here, the main portal was not oriented towards the street but with a view of the beautiful Rhineland.
If you take a closer look at the remains of the wall, you will find a lead sigil winding its way through the wall joints. This separates the found old walls from the reconstruction. This is a common practice in archeology.
