    The "Alde Kerke" in Soest is the Petrikirche. It is so named because it is the oldest church in Soest. Before today's St. Petri church was built, there was already a predecessor building there, which was built there around the year 800 and later enlarged. The today's Petri church was then built around 1150 as a basilica and in 1174 first described in a document as "Alde Kerke".

      St. Petri is one of the oldest churches in Westphalia. A church on the site is mentioned in a document as early as 800.
      The current building was built around 1150. The three-aisled, Romanesque basilica has a two-storey paradise porch, which was built around 1180. The transept and the aisles were built between 1200 and 1240. The Gothic choir building with sacristy and the men's choir between the north aisle and the transept were built a little later in the 13th century.
      After a fire, the church received its three-story baroque dome in 1709. In the 2nd World War the choir and the transept were completely destroyed. The reconstruction lasted until 1955.
      The church combines different construction periods. The Romanesque style of the western part and the tower floors and the Gothic style of the choir create a charming unit with the baroque forms of the church. The Romanesque ceiling paintings and the Gothic wall paintings are particularly impressive inside the church.
