Trendelburg Castle was built in the 13th century (copy from "Liber vitae", Corvey Monastery, in the Münster State Archives) in the border area on the Diemel River - here there was a ford where important trade routes crossed - between the bishoprics of Paderborn, Mainz and the emerging Landgraviate of Hesse. Older villages in the valley (Trende, Sulten, Exen) were gradually abandoned and left in favor of the fortified Trendelburg.
