While in the Middle Ages people, animals and barrows of the farmers were transported across the Main, between 1911 and 1992 cars could also be transported with a "yaw cable ferry" built at the time.
After the Höchst Ferry was sunk in the mouth of the Niddam in 1945 to prevent an imminent demolition by the National Socialists, it was recovered after the Second World War, repaired and equipped with an electric motor and later a diesel engine.
With the construction of the Leunabrücke, the ferry service between Schwanheim and Höchst was stopped, but resumed in 1991 due to the protest of many citizens.
The old wagon ferry was replaced by the “Gustav Kolb” as a pure pedestrian and bicycle ferry and has since brought people quickly and reliably to the other side of the Main for a small fee.
Every Wednesday there are special Main Tours, downriver towards Kelsterbach - or upriver towards Frankfurt city center.
Interested parties can also book the “Walter-Kolb” ferry for special trips.
The old Höchst Main ferry can be viewed in the former Gustavsburg shipyard in Ginsheim-Gustavsburg.
