The idyllic Lake Kaltern is located in a hollow around 4 km from the village center of Kaltern and Tramin. Even though it is one of the largest lakes in South Tyrol, its dimensions are manageable: 1.8 km long, 0.9 km wide and a maximum of 5.6 m deep, it covers an area of around 155 hectares Popularity does not decline. In the warm summer months, numerous swimmers, sailors, surfers, sun worshipers and nature lovers come here. A total of four bathing establishments on the lake and a surfing school are open from May to September.
The lake itself is located at an altitude of 216 m, and on a hill above, the Leuchtenburg, the landmark of this area and a popular hiking destination with a beautiful view of Lake Kaltern, is visible from afar. As early as the beginning of May, the water temperatures climb to 17° to 19° C, and in midsummer they reach over 28° C. Only Lake Klopeiner See in Carinthia in Austria achieves similar values. Due to the southern and low location of Lake Kaltern, the air temperature is also up to 10° C higher than in the surrounding regions.
Kaltern is widely known among windsurfers: every day around midday the south wind, the Ora, blows from Lake Garda through the Etschtal valley and offers the best conditions for this sport. The south bank, on the other hand, attracts nature lovers: there is the largest preserved wetland between the Po Valley and the main Alpine ridge, the Kalterer See biotope. With its reeds and wet meadows, it is an important habitat for marsh birds and a resting place for migratory birds. A nature trail is around 7.5 km long and shows all its beauty.
