Today I was back in my old home town of Dessau-Ziebigk and I have to say that I am very disappointed with how negatively Ziebigk has developed since the reunification.
So it is difficult to feel at home when you have to look at the architectural confusion, e.g. of the new settlement, which almost reaches the granary. This mix of styles is horrible!
System winners seem to want to outdo each other in structural ostentation without considering the overall picture.
The formerly harmonious transitions from the village to the Elbe meadows in the form of farmland and meadows were completely destroyed.
What the Second World War and the social-fascist cliques in power did not destroy in the Honecker era is now being created by the new Federal Republican system.
Irrespective of historically grown structures, construction went wild and this in repulsive postmodern eclecticism.
Formerly very beautiful houses such as the house of master watchmaker Karl Dufft have been demolished and the oldest house in Ziebigk (built in 1743), the leaseholder's house, was robbed of its wonderful garden.
There is now a parking lot and ugly new buildings.
However, this development already began in the GDR era when, under Honecker, the former socialist comrades became more and more bourgeois and those who profited from the system wanted to live like western bourgeois philistines, i.e. in postmodern homes if possible.
The result was that a new housing estate was built on the right side of the Elballee up to the Kornhaus.
Distinctive buildings such as the Ziebigker Mühle disappeared into the sea of houses.
