The Varel windmill, which the last Count of Varel, Gustav Adolf von Bentinck, had built between 1847 and 1848, is a gallery Dutchman with a typical three-part structure made of a stone, here five-story substructure, the wooden construction of the "octagon" and the cap with the wings. It measures 29.80 meters to the tip of the cap and 39 meters to the tip of the upright wings. A pair of wings is 24 meters long. This makes the Varel windmill the second highest mill in Germany and one of the largest Dutch galleries ever.
