In 1736, the site passed into the possession of Count Heinrich von Brühl. After Brühl's death, the palace and garden lay abandoned until Camillo Marcolini, cabinet minister and director of the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory, acquired the property in 1775. He added a floor and built the east wing. Marcolini died in Prague in 1814. His son sold the property in 1835 to city councilor Carl Ernst Werner for just 31,000 thalers. Werner auctioned off the valuable furnishings and rented the rooms to Dresden citizens and wealthy foreigners. From 1847 to 1849, Richard Wagner lived above the Orangery during the renovations to create a hospital. He completed his Lohengrin here, met with the Russian anarchist Bakunin, and participated in the May Uprising of 1849.
Conditions in the old Dresden City Hospital were precarious at the beginning of the 19th century. Hope was offered in 1821 by the will of the late court president, Heinrich August Freiherr von Hünerbein, who left a bequest to the hospital. Plans for a new building were rejected, but in August 1845, the city council approved the purchase of the former Marcolin property on Friedrichstrasse by a vote of 48 to 3. The palace (Old House) housed 53 sick rooms, ten nurses' quarters, a pharmacy, a kitchen, bathing facilities, a laundry room, and apartments for officials. The May Uprising of 1849 transformed the palace into a temporary military hospital while the renovations were still underway.
