The place name "Kercgelderdessen" is first mentioned in a document of the Benedictine monastery Lüne 1263. On November 22, 1313 in Kirchgellersen the foundation of a Premonstratensian monastery, as a donation of the knight Lippold von Dhoren, recorded in a document.

About the exact date of the founding of St. Lawrence Church, the sources give no information. However, the local historian Friedrich Wilhelm Reineke draws the following picture from the first church in Kirchgellersen: "The little church we have to imagine as half-timbered with a thatched roof, which probably already equal a free-standing wooden bell tower belonged (...) In 1644, the old half-timbered church by a Feldsteinbau replaced with vault. "

In the Thirty Years' War, the church was ransacked and ravaged several times.

In 1856, the old church was demolished. At the beginning of Easter, the new church was built in neo-gothic style. In 1859 it was inaugurated.

The 44-meter high bell tower of today's building was built in 1904, as well as a new tower clock with four dials was attached. The bells of the two bells, the larger one from 1607, the smaller one from 1717, can even be heard in the west wind up to Lüneburg.

The bronze baptismal font dates back to around 1450 and is therefore the oldest in the church.
