It is located about four kilometers east of Kaub am Rhein near the town of Sauerthal in the Rhein-Lahn district in Rhineland-Palatinate. The border to Hesse is located east of the castle in the immediate vicinity.
Since 2002, the Sauerburg is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley.
