The exact time of the foundation of the Sint-Niklaaskerk is unknown, but it certainly existed in the early 12th century since Jan van Waasten, bishop of Terwaan, gave it to the new Saint-Niklaas abbey that he founded. The heavy west tower is 48 meters high and is built according to a typical coastal plan. The tower originally had a stone spire. In the years 1843 and following the tower was given a new brick spire, which had to be demolished again in 1866. With the restoration of 1891-1892, the spire was not rebuilt, but the truncated shape was preserved. The oldest bell in Veurne, called "'t Bommetje", dates from 1379 and is part of that carillon.
In 1494 the existing building was completely demolished and rebuilt with a three-aisled nave of five bays. The masonry was completed in 1495, the wooden vault in 1496, the shale roof in 1497, the mullioned windows in 1498. In 1775 the middle choir was extended to the east and raised in 1877.
