The reconstructed shelter along the Frontzate in Ramskapelle is a remnant from the First World War. The Frontzate, which is now a cycle path over the old railway bed from Nieuwpoort to Diksmuide, formed the Belgian line during the war by flooding the IJzer plain.
The shelter in Ramskapelle was one of these constructions on that line and can be recognised by the bas-relief of a cross on the back of the building.

Well-preserved site on the verge of the Frontzate
Here on the border of Ramskapelle and Pervijze, north of the Proostdijk, two adjacent brick shelters from WWI were reconstructed.
When the Yser Basin was flooded in 1914, the railway bed functioned as a natural dike. All culverts and canal passages were closed, machine gun and shelter posts were built into the bed. At the end of WWI, only the walls of these structures remained, and no shelter was covered with a roof. After the war, building materials were scarce. Local residents reused everything that could serve: steel profiles, wooden beams, corrugated sheets... Railway bars and sandbags were used in this reconstruction. Next to the shelters you will find a reconstructed 'Decauville narrow gauge' that served to supply the front. Definitely worth stopping here and taking a dive into the past.
