    Ferdinand Traugott Flinsch introduced mechanical papermaking in Blankenberg in 1843. Parchment paper and printing paper were still produced in this Thuringian town on the Saale River until 1993. Today, you can learn more about that era in a museum.

        The Saalebrücke at the Blankenberger Papierfabrik, built in the 19th century for city traffic and the rail operation of the works railway, was destroyed in 1945 by the German Wehrmacht. The wooden structure for agricultural vehicles was destroyed by the GDR authorities in 1952. It was only in 1992 that this important pedestrian bridge in the Green Belt was rebuilt and completely renovated in 2009.
