        In Hamburg, several particularly densely built residential quarters in large parts of the old town and new town were referred to as Gängeviertel. The quarters, which were mostly built up with half-timbered houses, emerged from the 16th/17th century as a result of increasing densification of the still medieval, small-scale city, and reached their greatest extent in the 19th century.
