Augustusplatz, one of Leipzig's central squares, covers 40,000 square meters and is home to important buildings such as the opera, the Gewandhaus, the Paulinum and the City-Hochhaus, which reflect different eras of the city's history. In the autumn of 1989, what was then Karl-Marx-Platz became known nationwide as the site of mass protests against the GDR regime. A year later, it was renamed Augustusplatz. In 1998, a fundamental redesign took place with the construction of a basement for an underground car park (concept: Professor Bernhard Winkler). The main idea was to emphasize the axis between the opera and the Gewandhaus. In this context, the Mendebrunnen received a counterpart in the form of a fountain in the northern half of the square. The contiguous square area was greatly reduced, but paved with high-quality natural stone materials. Newly planted rows of linden trees are reminiscent of the original promenade plantings. The lighting concept includes the round structures of underground car park entrances with outer walls made of frosted glass, which are illuminated at night. With the new construction of the main university building and a successor building to the university church, called the Paulinum, the architecture of the west side now gives the square character again.
