n the former quarries near Frömern, on the street "Ibbingsen" to Ostbüren, sandstones were recovered in the 19th century, which were used as quarry stones in the construction of houses, bridges and other structures. Remains of the former quarry walls can still be seen in several places. They give an insight into more than 310 million years of natural history in the area around Frömern. In addition, they have significance as a geological monument for the geological development of the Ruhr area, the Hellweg region and the southern Münsterland.
In the lower part of the quarry walls a part of the sandstone layer can be seen, which was mined here. It dates from the Carboniferous period and was formed about 310 million years ago. About 95 million years old Grünsand-, marly and limestone layers from the Cretaceous period store it, during which the entire Müns¬terland, Ruhr area and the northern part of the Sauerland were flooded by the sea. Swirl holes and outcrops on the surface of the carbon sandstone and the structure of the chalk layers illustrate how the landscape was gradually covered by the chalk sea.
