The inhabitants of Svolvær live mainly from fishing, especially from cod. In the 1920s, about 7800 fishermen were registered. However, on Sundays during the main fishing season, from January to April, the number of fishermen rose slightly to 12,000. In 1947, 20,000 fishermen were employed. Today there are about 3000 catching up to 50,000 t of cod during the main fishing season. Around the fishery, a production including shipyard companies has built up. The cod is mainly processed into stockfish and exported to southern European countries.
In the last ten years tourism has gained increasing importance for Svolvær. [3] Since then, the cityscape has changed fundamentally. The city invested in the construction of new hotels and Rorbuer and created a diverse cultural offer.
