The lake was artificially created between 1906 and 1908 by widening the Tauben Elbe, a branch of the Elbe. The funds for this project (50,000 marks) were provided by the Magdeburg industrialist and patron Adolf Mittag, which is why the lake got its name. On the south side of the lake is the Marieninsel named after the wife Mittags with the Venus temple.

Promenade paths lead around the lake. At the lake there is a rental of rowing and pedal boats, with which, depending on the water level, the adjacent arms of the Elbe can also be navigated. From the beer garden to the west of the lake, a flight of stairs leads to the lake shore.
From 2006 to 2008, the lake was extensively renovated for 1.7 million euros and the fresh water supply improved. This had become necessary because of the consequences of the Elbe flood of 2002 and the progressive silting up.
