    The baroque water wheels and pumps were completely renovated around 1860. The impressive, now almost 150-year-old "new" water wheels and pumps of the water art of the Herrenhausen Gardens are an outstanding technical monument. They are still fully functional and today regulate the water level of the graft surrounding the Great Garden with line water. However, the entire facility was in need of renovation and could not be accessed or visited for years. The final construction phase of the renovation is currently in progress, so that the water art can probably be visited again in 2019.

      The Hanover-Herrenhausen weir, consisting of the so-called state weir built in 1913 (with three 10m weir bodies) and the so-called municipal weir (with two 25m weir bodies), built in 1956 to replace a lost needle weir, serves to ensure the navigability of the Leine and Ihme Hanover urban area, the flood protection of the city of Hanover and the industrial water supply to some industrial companies in the Hanover urban area.
      The weir control, power supply and the individual drives for three 10 m weir bodies with attached fish belly flaps were renewed in 1952. In 1956, the two 25 m weir bodies with their drives were built and connected to the control and power supply.

      A 10 m weir field (field I) of the state weir was made available in 1997 for the construction of a Herrenhausen hydroelectric power plant and has been used to generate electricity for the city of Hanover since 1999.
