The Chapel of the Holy Spirit (Beguine House), along with the town church, is the only surviving example of medieval buildings on the town island. In 1390, Dietrich Kremer and his wife Elisabeth founded an altar in the newly built hospital chapel at Sandauer Tor, which was dedicated to the Holy Spirit and the Apostle Andreas. The sandstone relief above the entrance from after 1401 shows the flagellation and crucifixion of Christ. The depiction of Christ's wounds includes a reference to the “Holy Blood” of Wilsnack, which was the destination of a mass pilgrimage movement in the late Middle Ages. During the Reformation, the hospital was transformed into a so-called beguine house, whose residents were obliged to provide nursing care and lay corpses.
