Mühlberg was first mentioned in a deed of gift from Duke Hedan to Bishop Willibord of Utrecht in 704. However, the place was already mentioned in a monk's chronicle in 319.

Mühlberg (Gotha district) is next Arnstadt and Grossmonra the oldest documented Thuringia. In earlier publications, it was referred to as the oldest village in the whole of eastern Germany.
