Øyvindtjønna is a small lake between the mountains Vassfjellet and Litjfjellet. This place has been of great importance to hikers and pilgrims for centuries. It was named after the Englishman St. Edwin, king of Northumberland in the 7th century. From the lake you can see as far as Trondheim and the Nidaros Cathedral - a welcome sight for all pilgrims.

Already in the Middle Ages a chapel stood here at the lake, of which only fragments remained after their destruction in the 17th century. These were initially kept in the Melhus rectory, but then fell as firewood the army of the Swedish General and Baron Carl Gustaf Armfeldt victim when he marched in 1718 through the valley.
