After the Christianization of Rügen by Bishop Absalom of Roskilde, this church was one of the first village churches on the island and was probably begun before 1200 (1182) as a three-aisled columned basilica made of brick with fieldstone enclosures. This is evidenced by the Romanesque choir square with pilaster strips and the semicircular apse, which are connected by triumphal arches and are decorated with round-arch windows, decorative friezes and beveled buttresses. The three-aisled nave with cross pillars and a flat ceiling was then built, and the choir also originally had a flat roof. The Gothic cross-ribbed vaults in the choir and in the nave, which had been extended by one bay to the west, were installed at the end of the 14th century. At the same time, the side aisles were renovated. The windows in the clerestory of the central nave were bricked up and all three aisles were brought under a common roof. On the south side of the choir there is a small cross-ribbed vaulted vestibule. Here the so-called "Swantevit Stone" - presumably a symbol of the fallen paganism - was walled into the side wall. The north sacristy is equipped with a cross-ribbed vault, and today a winter church has found its place here.

The village church of Altenkirchen is part of an ensemble with the cemetery and the so-called Kosegarten House. Ludwig Gotthard Kosegarten was a pastor in Altenkirchen from 1792 to 1808 and hosted Ernst Moritz Arndt and Caspar David Friedrich, among others. He corresponded with Goethe, Schiller and Herder. Many of his own literary works were written in Altenkirchen. Kosegarten became famous for his sermons on the banks of Rügen.

The village church of Altenkirchen, the second oldest church on Rügen, is a three-aisled, towerless pillar basilica, the nave of which is complemented by the indented square choir, the semicircular apse, a sacristy and a vestibule. The building from the 13th century was later expanded in the following century by adding side aisles and extending it to the west.

The masonry is made of natural stone in the lower part, otherwise of bricks. The gable roof also covers the side aisles. It was rebuilt for the last time in the 19th century. Extensive furnishings have been preserved inside. These include an altarpiece by Elias Keßler from 1724, the baptismal font from around 1240, the torso of a baptismal angel from 1730, a triumphal cross from the 14th century and the organ front from the 19th century.

Cute, small village church with a separate wooden bell tower. Should visit if you are in the area.
