The Litberg (Gauss Tower)
The Litberg in Sauensiek is with 65m above sea level the highest elevation in the district of Stade. The Litberg falls thanks to the astronomer and physicist Carl Friedrich Gauß a special role: on the published by the German Bundesbank on April 16, 1991 ten-mark notes on the one hand, the scientist and his heliotrope per se, on the other a map detail with the Litberg shown.

Gauss and the Litberg
From the summer of 1821 Gauss had commissioned the surveying of his kingdom on behalf of the Hanoverian king George IV. The Litberg played a very important role. On September 27, 1824 Gauss was delighted: "Many houses of Altona can be seen on the Litberg." The Zeven church tower was also visible from the Litberg, and the Zevener tower allowed, if the weather was fine, if not the smoke of peat bogs darkened the sky, a line of sight to Bremen.The net was knotted, the work accomplished .......

Carl Friedrich Gauss

In his late years, Gauss dealt with geophysics and geodesy. Gauss was director of the Göttingen Observatory from 1807 until his death in 1855.
