More than 1,000 years of history, myths and legends surround the Old Palace in Stuttgart. A place of history, residence of the powerful, protection castle and royal burial place, splendid and famous splendor castle of the German renaissance, victim and again resurrected cultural property of heavy wars.

The old castle in Stuttgart was once the seat of the counts and dukes of Württemberg. The mighty building complex with its characteristic towers encloses a magnificent arcade courtyard in the style of the South German Renaissance.

In the 10th century, a water castle was built to protect a stud - the "Stutengarten" which gave Stuttgart its name. Count Eberhard I made it in the 14th century to the headquarters of the Wurttembergers and had them extended to the Dürnitzbau. In the 16th century the castle was rebuilt by Aberlin Tretsch and Blasius Berwart under Duke Christoph to a prestigious residence with a staircase, arcade courtyard and Protestant church. For four hundred years, the Old Palace was the center of power of the Wurttembergers.

It was not until the reestablishment of Ludwigsburg as a royal residence in the 18th century and through the construction of the New Palace that it lost its significance. A horrible fire in December 1931 and the bombs of World War II destroyed the castle in 1944. However, the castle church and Württemberg royal tomb remained largely undamaged. The reconstruction of the old castle lasted until 1969.

The old castle goes back to a water castle built in the 10th century and was once the seat of the counts and dukes of Württemberg. The mighty building with its characteristic towers encloses a magnificent arcade courtyard in the style of the South German Renaissance.

Since 1969, the State Museum Württemberg is housed in the Old Castle.

The Old Palace is located in the heart of Stuttgart's old city center
and is directly adjacent to the New Palace.

Many basic features of the old moated castle have been preserved.

After extensive damage in World War II, the castle was significantly altered during reconstruction. The mighty round towers on the south side are clearly visible. The north side, however, with its unadorned entrance facade, appears rather simple
and timeless. Behind the entrance gate opens a baroque arcaded courtyard,
which was added to the castle much later. Today, the complex is
surrounded by numerous squares and streets, where a large moat originally stood.

The castle now houses a church and the Württemberg State Museum.

In terms of atmosphere, the old moated castle, without a moat, feels like a conventional building complex with medieval features. The complex has been largely altered and bears little in common with a moated castle, but is nevertheless
very impressive. A visit is worthwhile.
