      The Pfaffenteich (Low German Papendiek) was formed by the embankment of a dam (later called Spieltordamm) at the northern end probably shortly after the city was founded in the 12th century, initially as a mill pond in a once marshy depression. The waters originally had a length of about 350 meters southerly extent up to the height of the Schloßstraße, where the Mühlendamm was limited to the south and operated since 1178 watermill [1].
