      The Rattenfängerhaus is one of the most famous houses in Hameln's Old Town. It is one of the most magnificent buildings of the Weser Renaissance. The building stands at the junction of the Bungelosenstraße and the Osterstraße. The Rattenfängerhaus was built in 1602/1603 by the master builders Johann Hundertossen or Eberhard Wilkening for the Hamelin councilor Hermann Arendes. Since 1917 it is owned by the city of Hameln, today in the Rattenfängerhaus operated a restaurant (rattenfaengerhaus.de). The facade has been preserved in the original.

      The house is called since about 1900 as Pied Piper house. His name is based on an inscription in a wooden beam on the Bungelosenstraße side facing the house. This is the excerpt of the Hameln children in the wake of the Pied Piper on June 26, 1284 reports:

      ANNO 1284 ON DAY JOHANNIS ET PAULI WAS THE 26TH OF JUNE - DORCH HAVE BEEN PIPED WITH ALLERLEY FARVE CXXX CHILDREN SURPRISED INSIDE BIRDS BORN - TO CALVARIE BI LOST THE HEADS.
      According to legend, the Pied Piper led the children out of the city through Bungelosenstrasse. As a result, playing music in the street was forbidden at all times (bungelos = drumless, without drum).
