The monastery, which was located a little off the Breite Straße (former city boundary), was probably built in Gothic style before 1308. The monastery was secularized in the following years after 1526 with the introduction of Lutheran doctrine and the Reformation in Anhalt. The remains of a narrow pulpit, the tracery of some windows and the cross vaulting in the cloister are noteworthy features of the monastery ruins. The church of the monastery was destroyed in the Thirty Years' War. The former hospital was renamed St. Johannis ("Poor Monastery") in the 17th century - this is also the name of the foundation that still exists today. Today, the monument houses faculties of the University of Anhalt.
