The Green Citadel is a building in Magdeburg designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser. It was completed in 2005. The cost was around 27 million euros. It was the last project that Hundertwasser worked on before his death. With the Hundertwasser School in Lutherstadt Wittenberg, he artistically designed another building in Saxony-Anhalt.
The Green Citadel encloses two courtyards, the larger of which has a fountain.
No two windows of the same shape can be seen from any of the windows.
The name of the building is based on the grass-covered roof. There are also a large number of trees on, in and around the building. Some were planted on the roof, and others have roots on the outside walls of the apartments. These "tree tenants" are in the care of the respective tenant and are looked after by them.
After completion, the external condition of the building should be as unaltered as possible. As the trees grow and the exterior paint fades, it is supposed to change and convey the feeling of a building aging.
The tenants have the right to decorate the windows, so they can design the facade around their windows as far as their arm and brush can reach. However, so far only one tenant on the south side of the house has made use of this right and installed a small mosaic.
Some of the tools that the craftsmen actually used to work with are symbolically incorporated into various railings in the building.
