    "... The historic Ruhr lock through which you enter the island goes back far into the industrialization history of the city:
    Coal mining had been taking place in Mülheim an der Ruhr since 1460. However, the transport of the mined material upstream only became possible with the completion of this lock in 1780. Despite manual operation, a ship was sent through every 10 to 15 minutes at peak times. In 1927 - after the construction of the Kahlenberg weir - the level of the Ruhr had increased by 1.50 meters. The lock had to be adjusted. From 1993 to 1994 it was completely renovated. It is still in operation today and increasingly serves the ever-growing Ruhr water tourism, for example when house, leisure and sports boats travel towards the Mülheim city harbor or further to the Rhine. ..."
