The Theresienwiese was named after Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen, married to the Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig, who later became King Ludwig I. Their wedding was celebrated on October 12, 1810 on the Theresienwiese. A horse race was held at the end of the celebrations. The decision to repeat the race the following year gave birth to the Oktoberfest tradition. Today on the Theresienwiese, popularly known as Wiesn, not only the Oktoberfest takes place with well over six million visitors from all over the world, but also the agricultural exhibition every four years as well as the smaller spring festival during the year and the Tollwood Festival in winter as well as circus guest performances. A labyrinth of electrical systems, transformer stations, water pipes, sewage pipes, communication lines and gas pipes is laid out under the Oktoberfest.
