Myoshin-ji is the largest Zen temple complex in the city and the whole country. With over 46 branch temples, it is a "Buddhist small town", a whole world apart. Only a few temples can be visited, most are closed to the public. Nevertheless, it is worth a visit of the plant.

The most convenient way to reach the temple complex is from the main train station on the JR Sagano Line, getting off at Hanazono Station (4th stop from Central Station)

Myoshin-ji is the main temple of the Rinzai lineage of Japanese Zen. He is thus about 3500 temples across the country. The Rinzai Line is the second largest Zen school in Japan. In Rinzai Zen, zazen (meditation) is practiced face-up to the center of the room. Another striking training tool is Koan training. A koan is a short phrase or a story that can not be solved with the intellect ("What is the sound of clapping ONE hand?"). The koan training is to make the student recognize his true (being) nature.
