    From the viewing terrace you have a wonderful view over the roofs of Bamberg, to the cathedral and also to the Altenburg. In good weather, the view extends to the Jura.

      The former Benedictine monastery of St. Michael was founded in 1015 at the suggestion of Emperor Heinrich II. Today it impresses with its mighty baroque-style buildings.
      Already in 1117 the first church fell victim to an earthquake. Bishop Otto the Holy then had a Romanesque church built and the appearance of the medieval monastery castle changed only slightly up until the 17th century. After a fire in 1610, the church was rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style. In the 18th century the monastery complex was given a baroque appearance by the Dientzenhofer brothers. The baroque church façade with its impressive staircase, the tomb of Saint Otto and the neo-Gothic net vault are particularly worth seeing. The information center in the courtyard of the monastery also offers the numerous visitors to the Michaelsberg a contact point.
      Currently (2022) the church cannot be visited from the inside, as extensive renovation work is pending, which will take several years.
