"... Agriculture in the central Ruhr area between the big cities is undoubtedly a very rare and now unusual land use. But in a strip between Essen and Gelsenkirchen there are fields and orchards that are preserved and form a mix between agriculture, local recreation and nature reserve. They are an integral part of the 290 hectare Mechtenberg Landscape Park, which was redesigned by the Regionalverband Ruhr in 1999. The core of the landscape park is the prominent mountain of the same name. which originates from the ice age and paradoxically has lost considerable height in the past due to mountain subsidence. The highest point of the originally 100 m above sea level Mechtenberg is today at 80.3 m above sea level H Alfmannsweg. The hilly landscape is opened up by numerous hiking or cycling trails that lead through the fields and pass through avenues and biotopes. There is a lot to discover here in every season and a constant coming and going in nature can be observed. Whether blossoming fruit trees and timidly growing crops, harvesting or golden autumn leaves - the landscape park has something new to offer all year round. ... "
